The public-spirited ladies of Swanbridge village, led by Lady Janey Utox-Smythe, have been busy fund-raising to buy the butterfly field. As far as Janey is concerned, the village's community centre is as good as built, until she hears the news that the nouveau-riche Carpenters have been granted permission to build houses there. Then the field's owners have second thoughts about selling and finally, the redoubtable Janey is hit by a family scandal just when she needs her wits about her. As rumour and counter-rumour spread through the village, everyone wonders whether Swanbridge will ever be the same again.
