Vik, Mel, and Whittlesey Carver (aka WC) are an ill-sorted trio of misfits who live in a residential hotel which Vik calls the Hotel California. They have in common an affinity for blurring the truths of their lives with "wacky baccy" and alcohol, while pursuing a friendship of sorts with Em, their landlady's daughter. Em - "a nice girl, but flawed", according to WC - commits suicide, leaving her mother Marl, the residents and the domestic, Angelina, stunned and perplexed. The police require a statement from each of them and as they deliberate on Em's possible motives they review their own lives, what went wrong, who was to blame and how it could have been different.
