Dame Mary Barbara Hamilton Cartland (1901-2000) was an English writer. During her long career, she wrote over 700 books, making her one of the most prolific authors of the 20th century. She sold over 1,000 million copies throughout the world, earning her a place in the Guinness Book of Records. The world's most famous romantic novelist, she also wrote autobiographies, biographies, health and cookery books, and stage plays and recorded an album of love songs. She was often billed as the Queen of Romance. THE ROMANCE OF FOOD will become one of your favourite books - EVER! It looks beautiful, the kitschy colour plates photographed at Barbara Cartland's own home, using her own knick-knacks for set dressing. Informative and unintentionally hilarious, from Barbara Cartland's comments underneath the recipes, e.g."This is a perfect starter for a cold wintry day when men have been out shooting or playing games. If you have to take their lunch out, as I often have to do, to a farmhouse or a barn, you can get the most excellent lined and padded zip bags in all sizes from the Army and Navy Stores", to the taglines underneath the illustrative photos, ('Chicken with pink sauce, chicken in pink quartz and the pink flush of your cheeks when he says "I love you".') But it is also eminently practical; the recipes are often simple and effective.
