Heartbroken that his duty and honour will not allow him to be with the only woman he has ever loved, Darius is cruelly ordered to join the Portuguese fleet as it makes its way into exile in Brazil. He fears that his resolve will weaken when he sees Amelia again but the many dangers a ship of war faces at sea prevents him from being tested. Instead, when the opportunity arises, he sets sail for England and the wife he hasn’t seen for a year, but there are nasty surprises waiting for him there which will rock the foundations on which his life has been built.Xerxes has rescued his one true love from the convent where she was being held against her will and they make plans for their happy lives together in England. Before their dreams can be realised they have to leave Spain and reach England but that proves to be more difficult than either of them imagined. French troops have swarmed across Spain on the pretext of supporting Marshal Junot who has taken Portugal without a shot being fired and every port is closed to English shipping. Out of desperation, Xerxes enlists the help of the Spanish patriot who helped him find Marie Louise, but the man’s assistance comes with a price and Xerxes soon finds himself embroiled in a deadly game of defying the French as Spain prepares for war.The Peninsular War is looming on the horizon and neither Darius or Xerxes can escape the conflict to come. The only question is will they have the courage to do their duty when the odds are against them and survive the maelstrom with their honour intact.
