Xerxes smuggling activities have been discovered and he has to leave England in a hurry before he is arrested. Fortunately the British government once again needs to call upon his skills as a spy and he is sent to Tilsit in the guise of a diplomat. There, Napoleon Bonaparte is celebrating his victory at the Battle of Friedland and the overwhelming defeat of both the Prussian and Russian armies. Xerxes task is to discover what agreement the French and Russian emperors reach between them which seems a straight forward assignment until he finds that the emperors are to meet on a raft in the middle of the River Neman. Their secrecy and the obvious friendship between Bonaparte and Alexander does not bode well for British interests and it will take all Xerxes ingenuity and cunning to find out what they have planned. After discovering that his brother is the mastermind behind a notorious smuggling gang, Darius agonises over what he should do. His conscience tells him he should inform the authorities about what he knows but Xerxes is his brother and the only family he has. Luckily he is saved from his predicament by unexpectedly being given a new ship and being sent to Copenhagen as an advisor to Admiral Gambier. The admiral is far from pleased to see him and only by taking extreme measures can Darius retain his honour and carry out his orders.
