The enemy has broken the trail on purpose. Sergeant Gresham and his military working dog, Banner, have one day to learn why.

A North Vietnamese reconnaissance element disappears through dry foothills after backtracking, walking water, crossing hard ground, and laying a defended false route. The tracker team cannot simply follow footprints that no longer exist. Gresham, visual tracker Jonah Pate, and Banner must rebuild the route from fragments while enemy security waits for anyone who chooses the obvious line.

Then the evidence changes the mission. The scouts are not merely escaping—they are screening a concealed movement corridor for a much larger force. With daylight running out and Banner barred from working after dark, Gresham must identify the true crossing before the American blocking force commits to the wrong ground.

Broken Trail is Book 3 of the War Dogs series, a Vietnam War novel of combat tracking, counter-tracking, hard choices, and the men and dogs sent after trails ordinary patrols cannot follow.
