After her husband was killed in the Crimean War, Lucy Grey was forced to seek aid for herself and her young son, Hal, from her husband's aristocratic family. The arrogant Sir Carlo agrees to her help her, but only if they both come to live at the family's country home. At first all goes well, but gradually Lucy comes to fear for Hal's safety. Eventually, she discovers the identity of her enemy and learns that the man she loves returns her affection.
