Germany was desperate to avoid unconditional surrender. As long as the Nazi war machine was fuelled by the factories of northwest Germany they might yet sue for peace on favourable terms. Nazi troops had blown every bridge on the Rhine, stalling General Dwight D. Eisenhower's bid to slash the industrial arteries of Nazi military power. He had to find a way to cross the Rhine and bring Germany to its knees.

Across the river, the Germans braced for the attack. They were the last hope of the fatherland. In one final blood-soaked battle, the fanatic resistance of the Nazis would test the courage of each American soldier as he stormed the Last Bridge to Victory...

Lawrence Cortesi was an American school teacher and prolific writer, who published multiple books, often telling history as a story in his trademark style. Born on August 6, 1923, he married Frances Barringer and had four children. He died on October 12, 1987.
