Desiree Longfellow sits tensely at the breakfast table. Finally the doorbell rings. She hunkers down, hoping that she can't be seen when her mother answers the door. Sure enough, it is a police officer!

Desiree slips away quietly with her Labrador Retriever and her Abyssinian cat. They leave by the back door, plunging forward into the perpetual twilight that is early December in Fairbanks, Alaska. Just as she starts through the deep snow, she hears the policeman calling to her to stop, or he'll shoot. She hurries up. He pursues. She leaves by the back gate and locks it behind her.

Desiree soon finds herself in the backyard of the house behind her, again with the gate locked. She hears policemen discussing which way she's gone. Desiree takes refuge near a trash burner inside an empty garbage can.

Just weeks ago she was an average seventeen-year-old who had just moved to Fairbanks, Alaska with her parents. Now she is a fugitive from justice, hunted by the police, for murder. She could tell them, "I didn't do it!" But who would believe her?

Desiree has better figure out how to convince somebody of her innocence soon. The killer would like her to take his rap. So far he has succeeded. Who will win, the killer or Desiree in this young adult thriller novel by Linda Cargill.
