The Faceless Fugitive

(1963)
A novel by

Six men went down into the old mine, but only three came up. As the last man out was hauled up, shots brought down the only surface shaft. The man, his face torn, held a revolver. He vanished on his way to hospital. Two days later, an unknown patient recovered consciousness in a nursing home, with no memory and his features swathed in bandages. When it became obvious that the police believed him a killer, he fought his way to the mine. But there, the mystery thickened.
