After he wins money in a card game at Fort Union to help his archbishop in Santa Fe build a cathedral, Father Grantaire, a former card sharp and French Legionnaire, is robbed while on his way back to his small parish. Grantaire must tell the archbishop he lost the money, until he sees the man who robbed him, and he's wearing a deputy sheriff's badge.
