Her Flame

(2026)
A Story by

I watch my cabin burn to the ground while a stranger drags me out of the smoke.
Jake Madden has soot on his jaw, command in his voice, and zero interest in my complicated feelings.
He’s a hero.
He’s off-limits.
He’s everything I shouldn’t crave.
Now I’m sleeping at his firehouse.
Wearing his spare clothes.
Pretending my pulse doesn’t jump every time his eyes linger.
It’s supposed to be temporary.
Just shelter.
Just gratitude.
Except he brings me coffee before I ask.
He stands beside me in the ashes like he understands loss too well.
Kisses me like we’re both starving.
Somewhere between grief and heat…
I fall.
Then another wildfire ignites.
Jake runs toward danger.
And I realize loving him means living with the constant possibility of losing him.
Worst part?
If the flames don’t take him from me…
My heart already belongs to a man who might never come home.
