Rare Scares

A collection of stories by

A nightmare can take any form, any form at all, provided it scares the hell out of you. Here I present a selection of dark fiction from the first half (and what I hope may someday be known as the “Silver Age” or “Sperg with a Chainsaw Period”) of my career. It's a shuddering hive with all sorts of nasty things collected over the past 15 years--from my earliest efforts to some brand-new offerings.

I have long been of the mind: why bother repackaging & reselling old stories, unless you’re Stephen King? On the other hand, however, to cast these little guys into the ocean and promptly cut them loose, that seems a waste as well as a shame. Why not reel them in and send them out again? After all, surely there are a few new readers out thar in them depths after a decade or more has passed. Even getting just a few more bites really does mean so much. Each one still feels like a bloom of warm electricity.

Published stories can slip into obscurity for any number of reasons. If we’re being honest, most of them start and stay there. Beyond that, some anthologies & collections go out of print, some publishers close down altogether, and some projects are cancelled before ever seeing the light of day. There are a couple of that last sort here too, just so I can’t be accused of all double-dipping.

Okay, I think I’ve talked my inner cynic into going forward. Now to delete this and write the real copy.

"Simply put, David Dunwoody is one of the most imaginative dark fantasy writers working today”
Joe McKinney, author of
Dead City

"Dunwoody is able to paint vivid landscapes with his mastery of the written word, fill those worlds with compelling characters, and create suspenseful scenes of horror that keep the reader engrossed from the beginning of a tale until the very end."
