A dead man in a suspiciously clean car has Gloucestershire-based DI Keith Tyrell unravelling an intriguing mystery, but just as he gets his first real break, the case is passed to a central squad. And this happens again when Tyrell has to review, with the help of his team, evidence used in a five year old conviction of a child murderer. Hindered by resentful colleagues and an interfering civilian, the DI finds himself sidelined yet again. Still bitter, Tyrell, with his wife Jenny, is seconded to a Cotswold village he knows well, at the request of the American embassy. He is needed to help confirm the identity of a resident suspected of arranging terrorism for profit in the US. All is going well until a fresh corpse is deposited outside the local church during a concert, Tyrell himself providing the perfect alibi for the main suspect who was at the performance with him. But only when a friend's house is burned down and Jenny becomes a target does Tyrell realise the killer is bringing bigger plans to fruition and he must be stopped - at whatever the cost.
