Valen has just been promoted to ship captain in a multi-species mercenary fleet when he receives a message from his brother, Naval. Members of his family are at risk, and his brother is asking for Valen��s help.
On leave from his fleet, he ships out for the planet where his brother lives. Along for the ride is his seven-foot tall, wise-cracking, bear-like alien friend and executive officer Shargrel.
But Naval is in greater danger than his message indicated. And now so is Valen. Getting himself, Naval, and Shargrel out of a dangerous situation is going to take all his skill, plus the help of some surprising new friends.
