The village bell rings once before dawn, though Nerys tied its clapper shut herself the night before. By full light, half the village cannot remember their own children. A miller stands in the road holding a daughter he no longer knows. Two sisters fight over the same baby. And the village archivist, the one woman whose ledgers still hold every birth and burial and patched red cap, is the only thing standing between forty people and the loss of their own names.
Gorm is Chief Rift-Healer of the First Fortress, and he pulls corruption out of other people's bodies and carries it in his own. He arrives to a chapel full of strangers, a boy dying of a cold that has fingerprints, and a woman bleeding through an old ritual scar with silver light moving underneath it. He says her name before he knows where he found it. Somewhere behind his own memory is a burning room, a woman's hand locked around his wrist, and a face scrubbed clean out of him.
The Church calls Nerys a cursed vessel and wants her purged, which is a polite word for burning healthy memory out of a living mind. The Riftwardens call her a patient. Nerys calls it what it is and writes it down.
But the thing under the chapel is only the first of seven doors cut into the old fortress line by a patient hand, and it has already learned that the fastest way to take a valley is to make it forget it was ever whole.
Genre: Paranormal Romance
