Elizabeth McFarland, daughter of an army officer who is captured by the Kiowa, transforms from sister and friend in the white world, to respected healer in her adopted family. Her brother, Noble, and his best friend, the half-Comanche Johnny, both scouts for the army, ride out to find Beth before it's too late. Their journey leads both men into different lives, ones they'd never thought possible.

Seeking information about Beth, Johnny returns to his mother's tribe, where he rediscovers his roots. Living as a Comanche threatens to divide him from his blood-brother, Noble, and the life he has lived until the decisive moment he rides with his tribe on a raid against the white settlers.

Noble's search leads him to unexpected and terrible loss. Yet in return, he finds a love he never expected, though it must wait for him to complete what he feels is his mission, finding Beth.

Feigning insanity, Beth survives the first few terrible months as a captive. Finding forgiveness and healing in the company of a little boy, she must ultimately choose between her white family and the one she has created among the Kiowa, knowing that the end of their traditional ways are coming soon.

The Treaty of Medicine Lodge brings everyone together for a final time. Decisions each one makes will affect not only their individual futures, but that of those they love.
