EAGLE MAN

It didn't add up. Settlers were being murdered for no apparent reason. A beautiful Indian girl had been raped and killed.
The people of Guthrie were frightened and they needed help. That's why they called for John Cutler. Cutler was a trapper who could follow the trail of man or beast and had a reputation for being one tough hombre.
This time, though, things were different. Cutler was pitted against an enemy who was his equal in strength and cunning. It was to be a battle to the death, and it was anyone's guess which one would survive.

H. V. ELKIN

Born in Amsterdam, NY on June 23, 1935, Vernon Hinkle, a.k.a. 'H. V. Elkin' received his B.A. from Ithaca College, NY and M.F.a. from Yale Drama School in 1961. His eclectic writing career includes magazine articles, speeches for corporate executives, as well as such highly-acclaimed novels as MUSIC TO MURDER BY and MURDER AFTER A FASHION. It was during a visit to his publisher, Tower Books, that he was asked to continue the JOHN CUTLER series.

"The editor for all of the Tower books was Milburn Smith, and - since it was only yesterday, so to speak - I remember sitting in Milburn's office discussing one of my mystery novels (to be published under my own name), when he informed me that John Benteen had passed away after starting the Cutler series with just two novels. He wondered if I'd be interested in taking it over. After I got on board, he told me the only problem was my name didn't sound western, so I came up with an anagram for V. Hinkle, which, having an "elk" in it, somehow sounded western to me. I enjoyed writing under my new name; it gave me a great sense of freedom and, with that, a different style."

Vern has also directed in educational, community and professional theaters, high points being The Odd Couple and Golden Boy in Athens, Greece. His one-act plays have been presented in New York City at Theater-Studio and, by Love Creek Productions, at the Harold Clurman Theater. A trilogy of one-acts featuring older actors was presented twice at the Westbeth Theater Center. His one-act, SHE'S BEEN AWAY, was a finalist in THEATRE THREE's Sixth Annual Festival of One-Act Plays and won the Market House Theatre (Paducah, KY) competition.
