Summary

After getting out of rehab for opioid addiction, Bittern Hatfield moves into employee housing on Ryder Ranch, an expansive barrel racing operation in rural Montana belonging to his sister, Freya’s, new husband, Deacon Ryder. There, he slowly works towards normalcy while grappling with his past trauma involving an injury from a mining accident back in Kentucky, as well as the recent death of his father and brother, with whom he had a complex relationship.

The last thing on his mind is romance, but when the daughter of the land manager catches his eye, he finds himself with a new hope for the future.

Fresh off a breakup with her boyfriend of two years, Janie leaves the city for a weekend back home with her parents. Despite having finished her degree and found a good job, she finds herself pining after a slower life on the ranch. She doesn’t intend to go back for good, but when she meets steady, quiet Bittern Hatfield, she starts to reevaluate what her future holds.
