The Home Love Built

(1999)
A novel by

Gabe Gallagher is a sheriff in Mountain River, Oregon, and a single parent of an 11-year-old girl, Shelby. He's had a rough year. First his wife walked out on him, then his father died. He's been trying to run the Sheriff's Department, keep his father's fruit farm going until he can sell it, and be mother and father to Shelby. Laura Barrett is a paralegal working at one-man law firm in Portland. Gabe Gallagher is a long-time friend of her boss, and Russ has assigned Laura to Gabe to help him wind up his father's estate. This entails taking a complete inventory of Gabe's parents' house and putting the house on the market. The two get off to a bad start when Gabe is late for their initial meeting, but Laura isn't the only one upset with Gabe. His daughter has been waiting for him, too. This isn't the first time Shelby has felt that she's at the bottom of her father's To Do list. She is one unhappy little girl. She's had as much upheaval in her life as her father, plus she's worried about losing him, too.
