It’s all change at Mill Street Station. The old hierarchy has been retired and a new broom has swept its last vestiges away. As a consequence Fiona Madden has been promoted to detective inspector and now heads up the CID unit. Sean Tracy has taken her post as detective sergeant.
Their first case under the new regime comes quickly. A man has been shot in the back outside the holiday village of Letterfrack. The dead man is not a local but has a connection to a past that the villagers would like to forget. The victim is identified be a for former member of the Society of Christian Brothers who ran an industrial school for boys located outside the village and synonymous with the abuse of young children. The motive appears clear but as the investigation proceeds other possibilities arise. The new chief superintendent, Rory Gorman, isn worried that Madden and Tracy will concentrate their effort of exposing the abuse which took place in the school.
As the investigation is just underway, Fiona’s son, Tim, is stabbed in Dublin and she rushes to his aid. A prime suspect is identified
One of the former residents of the school is identified as a prime suspect in The Donnelly murder as the team concentrate on revenge as the motive for the death. The absence of forensic evidence hampers the progress as does the failure of the Christian Brothers to assist the enquiry. The team discover that they might be other motives for the crime and that the culprit might be closer to home.
The case exposed the historical failures of the industrial schools and the difficulty of gathering evidence from a close-knit community.
Fiona and Tracy have to open their minds to every possible motive in order to bring the killer to book. Join them as they slowly peel back the layers than hide the culprit
