It’s 1905, in the quiet Long Island village of Patchogue, so when a stranger’s body is discovered in a local barn, Daniel has to act fast to discover who the victim is. Unraveling the puzzle, however, may put even more lives in danger.

Daniel O'Halleran is looking forward to his first Valentine's Day with fiancée, Kathleen Brissedon, so imagine his shock when his former intended, the woman who left him standing at the altar the previous year, shows up, determined to pick up where they left off. Before he even has an opportunity to set her straight, however, a stranger is found murdered in the barn of a local resident, and he's called to investigate.

More than happy to avoid dealing with Prudence, he hurries out to the farm, where he finds an odd sight indeed. Not only has the victim been pinned to the barn wall with the tines of a pitchfork, but he is dressed in clothing that does not appear to be his own. To make matters worse, no one has ever seen the man before, so identifying him must be the first order of business. The only clue Daniel has is the torn piece of a death certificate and a signet ring, both found by Kathleen, who has once more managed to insert herself into his investigation.

While Daniel appreciates her assistance, curbing her enthusiasm is a continuous struggle, and his reservations about allowing her to assist him become even more pronounced when shots are fired in their direction. He needs to identify the victim and find out who the murderer is before the woman he loves becomes the next victim. But where does he start when the answers lie in the past and may come closer to home than he ever imagined?
