Death by committee meeting is a real possibility
After the Founders' Keepers disaster, the Academy Board has called an emergency review. Their verdict: the "historical preservation incident" is somehow entirely Alden's fault. Now he's facing termination unless he can prove his teaching methods have merit at tonight's board meeting.
The Board members arrive with their minds made up. There's Lord Pemberton, who believes commoners shouldn't teach nobility. Duchess Blackstone, whose son failed Alden's class last year. The ancient Magister Crane, who hasn't updated his teaching philosophy since bloodletting was medicine. And three others who just enjoy watching people fail.
Alden must defend his unconventional methods while his students "help" by demonstrating their skills. Naturally, this goes sideways immediately. Milo's presentation sparkles aggressively. Marcus's panic-driven testimony accidentally reveals several board members' secrets. Elena stress-conjures evidence that wasn't supposed to exist. And Darion keeps pointing out the Board's own policy violations.
But when one board member's vindictive agenda turns into an actual attempt to eliminate Aldenpermanentlythe students must weaponize Robert's Rules of Order, educational bureaucracy, and a truly disturbing amount of paperwork.
At Warden's Rest, academic politics are deadly. The actual assassination attempts are almost a relief compared to the subcommittees.
