Attempting to capture the young outlaw Ted Jardine, Sheriff Steve M'Cord accidentally shoots dead the boy's sister, Ann Jardine - his own fiancee. Although found not guilty of murder he is banished from his home town of Big Rock and this tragedy changes his life forever.
