Summer 1941

Grace Phillips' life is turned upside down when her father is murdered, leaving her the sole owner of Woodworth Manor. Once a stately home, the manor was turned into a speakeasy in the twenties, and a boarding house and restaurant during the depression.

Her dream was to raise the money necessary to reclaim it as a private home and allow her father to retire. Now, it seems, she can either leave things as they are or sell out to the developers who had been pressuring her father to sell.

Maxwell Stewart arrives in Shanley Bay not long after Grace's father's death. An FBI agent, he's there to investigate possible smuggling operations using Shanley Bay's docks. When it turns out the man he's investigating might also be the personal responsible for a murder, he teams up with the victim's daughter to bring the man, and his cohorts, to justice. What Max doesn't count on are the strange happenings surrounding Woodworth Manor.

The close proximity between Grace and Max leads to romance. Just as they're making plans for their future, their lives are interrupted by the onset of the war.

When Max is called to duty, will Grace be able to weather the storm of not knowing? And, when the worst is suspected, how will she fend for herself and Max's child?
