Magnus is one of the clan, the name used among the barbarian tribes of mountain men to refer to each other. Members of the clan often find themselves in conflict with the men of Taulane, a warlike race who keeps their economy going partly to slavery. Magnus finds himself as a prisoner of Taulane and destined to a life of slavery when it is discovered he is what the clan calls demon kind, to the men of Taulane they are known as mages.
