1945.

World War II ends, and artist Sam Gaskell heads for New York. He is in search of his best painting, which he realises isn't finished, to bring it to perfection.

His obsessive quest puts him in danger of losing Antonia Morgenstern - the love of his life.

The artist follows a fresh lead, as he realises that private detective Marlene Quinn is on his trail. He knows that she will pursue him to the ends of the earth.

Sam eventually tracks the painting to a convent in Liechtenstein, where he encounters a figure from his past who he did not expect to see again.

The artist once again has a chance of happiness, but once again his obsession overrules his heart.
Does triumph or tragedy await Sam Gaskell?
