The Temptation of Angelique

(1966)
The Jesuit Trap, Gold Beard's Downfall
(The seventh book in the Angélique series)
A novel by

The seventh in the Angelique series, the Queen of the Paris underworld and favourite of the legendary Sun King is summoned unexpectedly to the North American settlement of Brunswick-Falls. Danger threatens her everywhere, whether from the indigenous 'Red Indians' who covet her scalp, or the pirates of the Barbe d'Or who covet her beloved husband Joffrey's wealth. Naturally, the beautiful, seductive Angelique also outrages and causes consternation amongst the Jesuit priests, who fear her as the very personification of Evil. Hardback in purple cloth, gilt, pp424. Sergeanne Golon was the pseudonym of the husband and wife writing partnership Serge Golon and Anne Golon, although I believe it was Anne who did the actual writing, while husband Serge was engaged in historical research.
