I couldn’t fight anymore.
I kicked, scratched, punched, twisted until every muscle in my body hurt. I begged men who didn’t know the meaning of mercy and screamed for help until my throat burned.
But nothing worked. Eventually, my body began to give up, and I understood that it didn’t matter how badly I wanted to get away. They were stronger than me. There were too many of them.
I was losing.
Blood was on the floor. Their hands pushed me down, and another gut-wrenching shriek tore from my throat. My fingernails dug into the soft flesh of someone’s arm when the sound of a door slamming against the wall cut through the room.
Everyone stopped.
Even me.
A man stood in the doorway. Tall. Broad. Dressed entirely in black, from the heavy motorcycle boots on his feet to the helmet concealing his face. I couldn’t see his eyes. Couldn’t see a single feature that might tell me whether I should be relieved or even more afraid. There was only the black gun in his hand.
For one horrible second, I thought he was one of them. But then he lifted the gun.
The first shot made me flinch. The second made the hands holding me disappear. I fell to the floor, too exhausted to run, and simply watched the stranger move through the room.
The attackers scattered. He killed two of them. Injured the third. The others managed to escape because he didn’t chase them. Instead, he turned to me.
I should have been afraid. But when the last attacker disappeared, I didn’t see the blood on the floor or the gun in his hand anymore. I only saw the man who came when I had stopped believing anyone would.
The man whose face I never saw.
The man I would never forget.
My savior.
Author's Note: The book Burn with Me is dark and contains heavy themes and scenes. Please check your triggers. It can be read as a standalone, but for a better understanding of the plot, I recommend reading Gamble with Me and Bleed with Me before starting this one.
Genre: Romantic Suspense
