Beneath the city, the collectors are still running.

Destroying one machine freed its prisoners. It also left traces of stolen magic inside Corren—and a growing sensitivity to the collectors that remain. Following them could lead him to the people still missing. It also puts him within reach of Malvers, the architect who knows how useful his former student can be.

Deep inside the volcano, Eliza searches the Ancients’ writings for the knowledge needed to defend the binding beneath her homeland. But the chieftains still challenge her authority, and her oldest friend’s distrust of Corren threatens to divide the people she must protect.

Then Malvers takes Corren captive.

Forced beyond the limits of his training, Corren begins to perceive the ancient presence imprisoned beneath the caldera. His changing sight could reveal what the collectors are doing to the mountain. His captor intends to push it further.

While Eliza struggles to recover the Ancients’ knowledge, the man she loves is becoming the enemy’s most dangerous experiment. Their bond has helped them survive before. But Malvers has witnessed its power, and now he has one of them in his hands.

If the binding fails, the thing beneath the mountain will destroy conqueror and conquered alike.
