A Story by

Once upon a time, a long time ago, these stories were told by my father to my brother and myself.
Our father''s name was Don Horridge. He was a spectacular man. Each night he would come home after work, have dinner, and before we went to bed, he would tell us his stories. His imagination seemed limitless, but as I grew older, I realized that he dipped into the deep well of his own life experiences when he was younger to develop his stories. He was born and raised in Vermont, and really did walk miles to school through the snow of winter. As a young graduate of high school, he became an adventurer who explored the swamps of Louisiana with two other young men for nearly a year. He painted his colorful imagination from these many memories. Our father’s stories never frightened us. They were adventures of two brothers in remote lands. We were always the heroes. In the stories, our family or friends always rescued us. At ‘The End,’ we were glad to be home, but could not wait for the next sequel. He kept us spell bound as we waited for sleep to rescue us. I’m sure his incredible imagination and storytelling kept us from going to sleep much longer than our mother wished, but his creativity ignited both my brother’s and my innovations and visions. My brother is an artist and I enjoy writing. I feel privileged to append my thoughts and few literary gifts to my father’s stories. I pray that this story is the first of many. He never wrote his stories. I finally asked him to do so as he lay ill in his bed in Texas. He wrote about two thirds of this small book by hand, and shortly thereafter left for another adventure in heaven. That was in 1990. In his memory, I publish this book for all the older children who love to be read to before bedtime.
This is a story of adventure, compromise, and love. Love and respect between two brothers and parents who dearly loved and respected both of us.
