In 1879 The gold mining community of Bodie, California, was the third largest city in the state, but it also averaged a killing a day. Into this town comes JOSH THORN, a freighter, to deliver supplies. Upon his arrival, he prevents BEN LAUTER, a sadistic deputy sheriff, from beating up a Chinese boy, SING TONG. That night, an unknown assailant burns Josh's wagons, leaving Josh penniless. However, SAMMY CHUNG, the leader of the Chinese community, has discovered that Josh once read law and hires him to defend Sing Tong. Josh quickly discovers that, in his defense of the Chinese, he has aroused the enmity of the white community.
