Discovery Road

(2026)
A novel by

Jolene Carli, a divorced mother recently released from prison, is driving to Chicago with her nine-year-old daughter, Abby. They are caught in a desert thunderstorm in California and rescued by Camden Spencer, a college professor of English, who is also bound for the Windy City. Jolene is a desert rat and Camden a brilliant Oxford-educated intellectual. Their worlds clash as they travel eastward in a small RV on Route 66, the ‘Mother Road’ that John Steinbeck so aptly named.
The journey is a chance for Jolene to escape from her ex-husband, a dangerous psychopath who is looking for Abby, and has contracted to deliver uncut diamonds to earn the money to start a new life. The trip is filled with danger and adversity as the Rollers, a gang from Los Angeles, search for the diamonds she is carrying.
Propinquity works its magic as they travel, masquerading as tourists. Camden bonds with Abby, exposing her to a world far beyond anything Jolene can offer. But the danger becomes very real
in unexpected ways, forcing them to fight for their lives.
While the settings are true to life,
Discovery Road is not a pilgrimage nor a travelogue. It is a journey of discovery for Jolene, Abby, and Camden as they meld into a modern family.
