I am not a man who makes impulsive decisions.

I am a US Marshal who ran a background check, reviewed a case file for eleven weeks, drove forty-three minutes early to a federal correctional facility, and brought granola bars.

These are the actions of a man with a plan.

The plan did not account for Mara Collins: former CFO, federal parolee, and the only person I’ve ever met who can make a Ponzi scheme involving counterfeit vibrators sound like a clerical error. She walked out of that facility and got into my car like she’d been expecting me.

She had not been expecting me.

I had, technically, been expecting her.

We don’t need to dwell on that.

What I was not prepared for: a road trip to Utah, a motel called h Desert Ros, one bed, a river hike that required full disclosure of the water temperature, and the specific problem of a woman who notices everything, argues about everything, and is right about most things.

Except the French press.

She is wrong about the French press.

I have been alone for four years. I am good at it. I am thorough, consistent, and professionally detached.

I was forty-three minutes early.

A funny road trip romance about a buttoned-up federal marshal, a woman who just got out of prison, and the second chance neither of them saw coming.
