The Monster Room

(2026)
A Story by

SLOANE

After five years in a Las Vegas ER, I came home to Rapid Junction with one goal: learn how to relax again.

Apparently, my little brother’s definition of relaxing is getting me blindfolded in a barn full of Halloween decorations and convincing me to try something called the Monster Room.

Fine.

It’s a role-playing game. Two strangers. One dark room. A little mystery. A little touching. Nothing I can’t handle.

Then the stranger puts his hands on me, and somehow, in the dark, I forget to be careful. For the first time in years, I’m not thinking about what could go wrong. I’m not scanning the room. I’m not bracing for the worst.

I’m just feeling. Which would be fine...

Except when the blindfold comes off, I can’t stop thinking about him.

And I have absolutely no idea who he is.

WADE

I’ve had a thing for Sloane Bennett since I was twelve.

Unfortunately, when you’re the shy kid who’s best friends with her little brother, ‘having a thing’ mostly means standing around turning red whenever she talks to you.

A lot has changed since then.

I’m twenty-seven. I run my own outfitting business. I can talk to women without spontaneously forgetting how sentences work.

Usually.

Then Sloane comes home.

She’s thirty-one, gorgeous, exhausted, and apparently determined to rediscover the reckless woman she used to be. So, when she walks into the Monster Room, I do something I’ve wanted to do for years. I make sure I’m the stranger waiting for her on the other side of the curtain.

She doesn’t know it’s me. And for one night, I get to touch the woman I’ve spent half my life wanting without all the history between us getting in the way.

The problem? Our turn is up and the blindfold comes off. And suddenly I have to convince Sloane that the man she’s been trying not to think about all week is the same guy she’s known since childhood.

Turns out getting the girl in the dark is easy.

Getting her to see me in the light might be the hard part.
