Detective Warren Temple, NYPD homicide detective and Special Agent Dave Anderson of the FBI once again join forces. Together they had faced and brought down the Laughing Man. Now they face a killer who has not been seen in more than twenty years.
The serial killer dubbed the Family Destroyer massacred twelve families, killing all but one member. At the age of ten, Anderson was the only survivor in his family. Finding the killer was the reason Anderson joined the FBI, but with no results.
Anderson sees a teletype at the New York City headquarters, and immediately feels his heart begin to pound and sweat break out on his forehead. Someone has killed an entire family with some things and the same M.O. as the Destroyer, though some other things are different. Anderson is sure the Destroyer is back.
Meanwhile, Detective Temple and his young partner William Groat are assigned to a homicide in the middle of Alley Pond Park in Bayside, Queens. It appears to be cut and dry at first, the victim having been shot in the head. But upon further investigation, Temple is sure there is a great deal more to the crime. When Temple discovers the truth, it will leave him with a choice. Completely devastate a single mother or commit a crime. The choice will not be an easy one.
Meanwhile, after two more families are destroyed, a task force is formed. Temple and Groat are asked to join, and along with three more Special Agents, they take on the case of a copycat killer or an old one resurfaced. Together they will face horrors never seen before, twisting turns, surprises, and a conclusion which will be unimaginable.
