Family Matters

(2026)
(The first book in the Chicago Nonhuman Community series)
A novel by

Wendy Dawson has finally started to settle into her new role as the Gatekeeper of the Chicago Non-human Community. She still misses her brother, but with Alec, her warrior pixie boyfriend, by her side she’s feeling less crushed by grief. Unfortunately, life doesn’t stop to let a lady get her feet back under her no matter how much she grumbles about it.

Alec is called back home to have a series of in-person meetings with his father that could have been an email and Wendy is left mostly alone to handle the problems brought to her by Ryan Mathews, who seems to be beset by family problems of his own.

Now Wendy is helping to remove a cursed amulet, helping Ryan fend off his entitled father, sorting through the secrets Ryan’s grandfather left behind him, and oh– a local vampire shopkeeper called with a concerning report of enchanted objects scattered through the city, which in turn uncovers a terrorist plot against Wendy herself.

Can Wendy, her new bodyguard (Alec insisted) Karah, and Alec (whenever he gets back) sort out the increasing number of Chicago’s sudden series of problems?

How did Wendy get here? Away From Home is her first appearance. Curious about the poor vampire shopkeeper? That story is told in Cursed Keepsakes which happens at the same time as this story!
