Having just cleared up the mess from their latest investigation in Mary King's Close, Duncan and his colleagues in the Star Elite are looking forward to taking some time to enjoy life for a while, but their plans are soon scuppered when they receive reports of a murder and the victim died in a duel. Ordinarily, capturing the killer would be a matter for the local Sheriff, but when news arrives that other victims have fallen fowl of poker games, and died in resulting duels, murder at twenty paces is suspected. On each occasion, the killer's escaped and moved on to claim another victim. Can Duncan and his colleagues in the Star Elite find who's conning and romancing his way into ballrooms of Scottish aristocracy and killing seemingly randomly? Further, how a stranger can manipulate people into willingly taking part in duels in the first place.

When Duncan and his colleagues venture toward Pitlochry in search of the killer, Duncan finds someone far more intriguing, but Heather Forbes brings him an entirely different set of problems, and not altogether in a purely romantic sense, when it transpires that the killer has a strange fascination for her....
