When Lilly Jacks finds a young girl standing in her garden, she's at first wary of opening the door. The idea of a young girl wandering around the countryside is suspicious, but she's heard about the recent child abductions and wonders if the girl might be one of the missing children. However, when she does venture outside to speak with the girl, Lilly's quickly made aware of strangers lurking in the woodland at the end of her garden and they're armed and incredibly dangerous. Daisy's clearly terrified of them, but until Lilly can earn her trust all she can do is coax the girl into the house and look after until the Star Elite can arrive.
Her helping hand soon turns everyone's lives upside down though because Lilly and her family are soon drawn into the Star Elite's battle to protect Daisy from the bargemen. The Star Elite are looking for the escaped ex-clergyman, Reverend Gracie, but what they find is not just Carter but a web of lies and deceit that threatens everyone's lives. Erasmus is given the difficult task of not just protecting Daisy but Lilly too. The problem is that Miss Lilly Jacks is delightfully distracting, and the feelings he has for her have nothing to do with his investigation.
