Three brothers. Three fates. One terrible secret.

Spring 261 AD. Following the capture of emperor Valerian at Edessa in Syria, crisis grips the Roman empire. Usurpers compete for the imperial throne. Barbarians are massing on the frontiers while plague and growing economic woes have shaken the empire to its core.

In the western provinces of Gaul, Germany, Britain and Spain, Postumus, a usurper takes the imperial title and promises a better future. An end to Frankish and Saxon raids that have become a growing menace.

On the isle of Vectis of the southern coast of Britain, Veda’s aimless life of idle pleasure has come to an end as he finds new purpose and employment. An important job that will soon lead Veda on a mission, far beyond Rome’s Rhine frontier and into the vast and uncharted eastern forests where the free barbarian tribes dwell.

A vital mission for the security of the empire. A journey full of danger where it is not clear who is friend or foe. Travelling into the heart of free Germany Veda soon begins to realise that he has a chance to prove that screw-ups like himself can become hero’s too.
