When Kent rides into the small Wyoming town of Groveland,, the local residents of the small valley town don’t know what to make of him. He has the appearance of a gunfighter, but the manners of a schoolteacher.
Kent seeks out the town sheriff and asks if any of the local ranches were hiring. The sheriff knows of only one job available and that is as a farmhand at the farm of the widow Teal, who lives on her farm with her three children.
The sheriff and Kent ride out of town to the Teal farm where Kent meets Teal, her twelve-year-old daughter Mary, ten-year-old son John and six-year-old daughter Rebecca. Teal takes a chance on Kent and hires him since it’s early spring and there is much work to do.
Kent proves his worth on the farm, plowing, planting and making repairs. But Kent is far more than a simple hired hand. He is all that stands between the feud between the Widow Teal and the largest rancher in the valley, a man named Frey.
Frey needs Teal’s land for his cattle. Teal’s husband was murdered by Frey and would never sell. Caught between the two warring factions is Kent.
The situation turns bloody when Frey hires the services of a professional gunman named Cage, whose only job is to eliminate Kent.
Both Frey and Cage get far more than they bargained for when Kent reveals himself to be much, much more than a simple farmhand.
