Frank Doy finds himself caught up in a gang battle he doesn’t understand, and seems to have nothing to do with him.
First, Isaac Runyon wants Frank to persuade his friend, DI Bill Peart, to back off from the work he is doing. If he can’t, there will be consequences for Frank and Bill Peart, as well as for Jimmy Mack, Frank’s neighbour and friend. Then Rocky Morgan has Frank beaten up, and warns him to have no further contact with Runyon - or there will be worse consequences!
Who is the good guy in all this? Is there one? Frank is perplexed and overwhelmed, for both his own sake and that of his friends. What to do? Which way to turn?
Desperate, and outnumbered and besieged, he needs help. He reaches out to Emma, his occasional collaborator and lover. Emma is a warrior, as good with guns as she is with foreign languages. She’s ready to pitch in to help Frank fight the forces of darkness, and help him try to make sense of what’s happening.
