(2026)
A novel by

A week after his release from prison, Al Kitchen is found dead beside a bicycle on a back country road. Al served 18 years in prison for beating a well-liked man to death during a botched robbery, but most everyone in this small town is unwilling to forgive him. Nobody feels Al could have changed from the reckless guy they knew although he believes he has. They prefer he died in prison, and they make sure he knows that upon his return to Holden.

No job. No license. Al lives in an old house his grandmother left him. He keeps to himself, painting the house and riding a bike. The only support he gets is from the cousin who lives with him, an outcast herself, and the police chief who’s been keeping an eye on the situation.

As the police chief suspects, Al’s death wasn’t just an accident. Someone is responsible, but who in this small town could that be?
