WHEN PARENTS TREAD ON YOUR DREAMS

Grace Kelly is the odd one out in her wealthy, sports-obsessed family, the child her parents believe will never succeed. Her desire to become an actor is viewed with doubt and disapproval. Her father treats her dreams with contempt.

Jessie Miller, the narrator of this story, is born in the poorest part of Philadelphia where ambition is never recognised. Her father is small-minded, suspicious and violent, seeking to take everything he can from her. Yet when one of her teachers discovers her gift for drawing, Jessie promises herself that she will use her abilities to break free .

Their parents may deride their dreams but they are oblivious to one thing. Grace and Jessie become determined to forge the life they desire.

The novel takes the girls from a chance meeting, the making of their unlikely friendship to the highs and lows of school life, burgeoning sexuality and love. Their move from Philadelphia to New York is both alarming and exciting. In their early twenties, they seem poised on the verge of success. Jessie opens a studio and begins to sell her work. And a film producer chooses Grace to play the marshal’s wife in
High Noon.

Yet all too soon they find out that success brings problems along with pleasures.

The first book in a series from the author of
A Love Most Dangerous, Cry of the Heart and Bold, Bright Spirit.
