Along the blood-soaked coast of West Africa, Lieutenant Henry Crawford of the Royal Marines has sworn to destroy the men who profit from human misery. Rumours speak of a secret river, an inland harbor, and hundreds of enslaved men, women, and children being worked to death. Disguised as traders aboard the Providence, they penetrate the mangroves and discover a hitherto unknown slave trading station under construction.
He plans to return with the full power of the Royal Navy to wipe out the slavers, but when they return, the slavers have vanished. Abandoned by the Royal Navy, and against all the odds, he and four Marines follow a trail of tortured bodies into unmapped jungle, where he battles violent storms and implacable enemies. Ignoring the dangers, he discovers new allies. Allies that give him the germ of an impossible idea.
