The Union has reclaimed Washington. But the war is far from won.
By the summer of 1862, the American Civil War has become something far greater than a struggle between North and South. France has entered the conflict on the side of the Confederacy, shattered the Union blockade at Charleston, and begun pouring weapons, ammunition, and troops across the Atlantic. Britain remains officially neutral, but its ships are once again trading with the South. For Abraham Lincoln, the nightmare he feared is becoming reality: America’s rebellion is turning into an international war.
Yet the Union is fighting back.
Along the Potomac, Robert E. Lee rebuilds his battered army on the Virginia heights while Federal forces prepare to cross the river. In the Shenandoah Valley, Stonewall Jackson launches another audacious campaign against a larger Union army. In Tennessee, Albert Sidney Johnston closes upon Fort Henry as the struggle for the western rivers enters a dangerous new phase.
And across the Atlantic, Napoleon III has plans of his own.
A powerful French squadron sails for the Gulf of Mexico carrying elite Zouaves and heavy artillery, officially sent to help the Confederacy reclaim New Orleans. But the French Emperor's ambitions extend far beyond simply helping Richmond.
Faced with enemies at home and abroad, Lincoln unleashes the industrial power of the North. From New York to Philadelphia and the shipyards of New England, the keels of a new ocean-going battle fleet are being laid down. Ironclads, armored frigates, and fast steam warships begin taking shape, built for a future confrontation with the great navies of Europe.
The Civil War is no longer only about whether the Union will survive.
It is becoming a struggle for the future of North America itself.
