Should she stay in the Amish community or return to the city? That was what Elizabeth Jantzi wondered about after her return from her Rumspringa. She was having a difficult time readjusting to the Amish ways of doing things. But, when her sister Ruby announces her engagement to Vernon, Elizabeth knows that she will need to spend the next month in the community.
Ruby seeing that her sister is struggling, suggests that Elizabeth speak with Vernon. When Vernon had returned to the community after his own Rumspringa, he had also struggled with his decision regarding where to make his life. Vernon and Elizabeth talk, and Vernon suggests that Elizabeth gives the Amish community a chance and that she attend events like singings in hopes of meeting someone.
Elizabeth isn’t sure that she’ll meet someone, but at the singing she is interested in someone who turns out to also be interested in her Jacob Schwartz. He walks her home, and a bed courtship begins. Elizabeth tells Jacob that she isn’t sure about staying in the community, but he tells her that it’s alright and he’ll accept whatever she decides.
Elizabeth and Jacob continue to court, and Elizabeth also prays and seeks advice from Bishop Yoder in an attempt to try and reach a decision that she can live with. She knows that no matter what she decides, her life will change. If she leaves the Amish community, she’ll be away from her family and friends there, but she also has friends in the city who are Englischers.
Through a series of events, Elizabeth explores what it is that she really wants and the steps to getting there. She also tries to help her Englisch friend Laurel who has recently become interested in an Amish man, whom she meets on a visit to see Elizabeth. To discover the path that Elizabeth chooses, read ‘Amish Love and Prayers’ now.
