Sarah Hooley is eighteen years old at the time when her rumspringa is ending. She has become close friends with an Englischer, Jacob Williams, and he is interested in different cultures and asks about her life as an Amish woman. She invites him to go home to her Amish community and see what Christmas is like there.
When Jacob gets to Sarah's community, he finds that he likes it, despite the difficulties that he encounters with Sarah's father, David, who is less than cordial with him. He experiences a crisis of faith as he tries to make sense of where he should be and the fact that returning to his hometown will mean that he and Sarah's friendship will end because they are on two different paths. Will he make a life-changing decision because of his love for her, his interest in the Amish community, or will he leave behind the care of a woman who has been his best friend for over a year?
Despite being friends, neither Sarah nor Jacob have acted on any feelings. Do Sarah and Jacob want to court each other, and they have simply not done anything about it because of their different backgrounds, or was their relationship destined to just be brief?
Jacob isn't the only one with an interest in Sarah. There is also Abram Schrock, her father's employee and son of the community's Bishop. Abram has had his eyes on Sarah for quite some time. However, he knows that her father is a strict man and very specific about the kind of man that he wants courting his daughter. Can Abram leverage his power as the Bishop's son to convince Sarah to fall in love with him?
Sarah is going to be baptized and make her home in the Amish community, but what does that mean for her? Is her heart in the community or hanging in the balance between the two ways of life that she has known? Will what her parents want for her override what she truly desires? Who, if anybody, has enough faith to find true love and make this the best Christmas ever?
