Margaret Yoder is recently divorced from Jared Black and decides to return home to the Amish community that she grew up in after living with outsiders, "Englischers" for years. Her family welcomes her back with open arms.
However, there is a lot of talk in the community surrounding Margaret's return. Some don't believe that she should be allowed to have her baptism because she was divorced. However, there is no rule against it since she hadn't left the community following baptism, but when she was young on her Rumspringa.
Margaret believes that in returning to her community, she'll be free of her ex-husband, but then she receives a court order in the mail and has to return to Virginia to face him in court. He wants to receive alimony from her. The request is denied, and Margaret returns home to Pennsylvania again.
Back home amongst the Amish, she begins to get to know Jonathon Beiler. He works with the post office and first delivered her summons to her. They begin to get to know each other better, and Margaret is happy that she is moving on with her life. Everyone in the community believes that Jonathon will never court again, but after meeting Margaret, that might change. Jonathon helps Margaret to get a job working in the carpentry shop. She loves the work and enjoys relearning the skills from her childhood.
However, will Margaret and Jonathon have a chance to really begin new lives while Margaret's ex-husband finds ways to cause trouble? She repeatedly has to travel back to Virginia to deal with the situation. Jonathon accompanies her to ensure she is safe. Jared is a violent, angry man and is not afraid to physically harm his ex-wife.
