A.A. Milne notes in his preface that he wrote this after his play (Mr. Pim Passes By) came out and was eagerly viewed by the masses. Says he "..with every play he writes the dramatist has within him full material for a novel". And he considerately notes that he called his novel "Mr. Pim" so as not to disappoint those who had seen the play and expected an entirely new plot.
